BARIATRIC (Weight Loss) SURGERY

Obesity has become one of the most concerning and rapidly increasing health problems in the United States. It is approximated that more than one third of our population is overweight or obese.

Obesity leads to life threatening diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, some cancers and stroke. It is one of the highest causes of preventable death.

WHY BARIATRIC SURGERY MAY BE AN OPTION TO COMBAT OBESITY

While some people are able to lose weight by only dieting and exercising, for others the process can be more difficult. Weight loss surgery (bariatric surgery) may be an option for those who have tried several weight loss programs and non-surgical methods and have not had success.

ARE YOU A CANDIDATE FOR BARIATRIC (WEIGHT LOSS SURGERY)?

The bariatric surgeons of New York Surgical Specialists follow the strict guidelines of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. Commonly accepted guidelines are: the patient should have a body mass index (BMI) over 40, is over 100 lbs. over their ideal body weight or has a BMI of 35 and experiencing severe health conditions such as high blood pressure or diabetes. Each case is different; therefore we strongly recommend that you visit our facility for a consultation

Gastric Bypass

Laparoscopic or Robotic Gastric bypass (Roux en-Y) is a surgical weight loss procedure for morbid obesity. Small incisions are made on the skin of the abdomen for this procedure, minimizing scarring. The stomach is “bypassed“ and a new, smaller gastric (stomach) pouch is constructed. In addition, the small intestine is reconnected in a new configuration in order to bypass that portion of the stomach. This results in weight loss through restriction of quantity as well as malabsorption of what is consumed. Gastric bypass has been studied and has been shown to be very effective and safe.

Lap band

Laparoscopic lap band (gastric band) is a procedure done through small incisions in the abdomen. An adjustable silicone band is placed across the top portion of the stomach. This limits the amount of food you can ingest. Over time, the band can be adjusted to change its size. This is done through a port placed under your skin. Bands can be removed surgically if desired.

Sleeve gastrectomy

Laparoscopic or Robotic sleeve gastrectomy is a surgical weight-loss procedure. Small incisions are made on the skin of the abdomen for this procedure, minimizing scarring. The stomach is reduced to a small percentage of its original size, by cutting off and stapling a large portion of the stomach along the greater curvature. This surgery is permanent and a portion of the stomach is removed from the body. It is the fastest growing weight loss surgery in the United States and has been proven to be safe and effective for nearly all BMI’s and weights.

Gastric revision

Bariatric Revision Surgery is for patients who have had bariatric (weight loss) surgery in the past and have regained weight, or have other issues which may require either switching to a different type of surgery, or re doing the original procedure. This is very patient specific and should be discussed with your surgeon.

Speak with your doctor about our surgical options. Procedures can be performed using laparoscopic (minimally invasive) or robotic surgery.
